How to Apply Lipstick | Applying Lipstick

KEY APPLICATOR - THE INDISPENSABLE BRUSH

Applying lipstick straight from the bullet tends to overload the lips, whereas a brush gives you control, enabling you to spread lipstick evenly over the lips, working it into the natural creases to ensure a smooth, longer-lasting finish. Make a little go a long way. The less lipstick you use, the less there is to smudge. Lastly, a brush is the ultimate key to soft, even contours - it blends lipstick with lip liner and eliminates harsh, obvious edges. Easiest designs to use are slim, flat brushes with flexible bristles, neither too long and unwieldy nor too short and stubby. Many professional make-up artists use fine art sable brushes with long handles for maximum balance and control.

How to Apply Lipstick

1. To outline lips, trace the pencil along the lip contours from the corners of the mouth to the centre on both upper and lower lips. A light, feathering touch works better than a heavy, single movement. If your natural outline is puckered, pull the skin slightly tighter by placing a fingertip at the edges of the mouth. Don't smile, a relaxed mouth gives you a more accurate contour. Trace the cupids bow to a gentle inverted curve - no pointed peaks.

2. To apply lipstick, either work a little from the bullet on to your brush, then paint on the lips, or dab lipstick on to the centre of the lips only and use the brush to blend outward to the contour lines. Use as little lipstick as possible, and a firm, even stroke. Blend the lip tone well with the contour line, but don't stray over it.

3. Blot the first coat with a tissue to absorb the excess colour. Retouch the edges without re-loading the brush.

4. If you feel the finished results are too subtle or too dull, print a little more lipstick on the centre of the lips only. Press your lips together or use the brush to blend.
