Greying of Hair: Why Hair Turns Grey

Hair derives its colour from granules of melanin pigment produced by cells in the hair follicle. With age melanocyte cells become less active and what look like grey hairs start to appear.

In fact the "grey" is a combination of normally pigmented hairs interspersed with white ones. Hair colour eventually turns completely white when the melanocytes cease to function altogether.

Nutrition and stress also affect hair colour. Stress burns up B vitamins in the body, as docs alcohol. A diet insufficient in these vitamins may also hasten the appearance of grey hairs.

According to celebrity trichologist Philip Kingsley, studies have shown that large doses of B vitamins can reverse greying in three months. Stop taking the vitamins and the graying of hair starts again. Check with your doctor before starting a course of nutritional supplements.
